Range Bag Essentials

## Eagle Mountain Range Day: Your Essential Range Bag Checklist

Hitting the range at Eagle Mountain is a fantastic way to hone your skills, but being prepared is key. A well-stocked range bag isn’t just convenient; it’s about safety and efficiency. If you’re new to shooting, or just want to double-check your setup, here’s a breakdown of the essential items you need for a successful day at the range.

**Safety First: The Non-Negotiables**

* **Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK):** This is paramount. Don’t leave home without it. Your IFAK should include, at a minimum:
* Tourniquet (CAT or SOFTT-W): Know how to use it!
* Chest seals (Hyfin or similar)
* Gauze pads (various sizes)
* Compression bandage (Israeli bandage or similar)
* Medical tape
* Gloves (nitrile)
* Trauma shears
* Antiseptic wipes

* **Eye Protection:** ANSI Z87.1 rated shooting glasses are a must. Clear lenses are good for indoor ranges, while tinted lenses are ideal for sunny Eagle Mountain days. Consider wraparound styles for maximum protection.

* **Electronic Ear Protection:** Protect your hearing! Electronic earmuffs are a game-changer. They amplify quiet sounds, allowing you to hear range commands, while instantly suppressing loud gunshots. Howard Leight Impact Sport and Peltor ComTac are popular choices. Don’t skimp on quality here – your hearing is irreplaceable. Remember to bring extra batteries!

**Essential Gear for a Smooth Session**

* **Firearms:** Obviously! Make sure they are in good working order and appropriate for the range you plan to use.

* **Ammunition:** Bring enough for your planned drills and some extra, just in case. Consider the type of target you’ll be using when choosing your ammunition.

* **Magazines:** Load your magazines before heading to the range to save time and hassle. Bring enough magazines to minimize reload time during practice.

* **Targets:** Paper targets, reactive targets, and silhouette targets – choose what works best for your training needs. Don’t forget target backers and something to attach the targets to the stand.

* **Stapler and Staples/Tape:** Secure your targets properly. A stapler is more robust than tape, but tape can work in a pinch.

* **Cleaning Kit:** A basic cleaning kit is essential for maintaining your firearms during and after your range session. Include a bore snake, brushes, cleaning solvent, and lubricating oil.

* **Shooting Rest/Bipod:** Depending on your shooting style and the type of shooting you’ll be doing, a shooting rest or bipod can improve your accuracy.

* **Multi-Tool or Knife:** A versatile tool is always handy for minor repairs, adjustments, or general tasks.

* **Sharpie/Pen:** Mark your targets, take notes, or label your magazines.

**Utah Sun Survival Kit**

* **Sunblock (SPF 30 or Higher):** The Utah sun is intense, even on cloudy days. Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating.

* **Hat:** A wide-brimmed hat will protect your face and neck from the sun.

* **Water:** Stay hydrated! Bring plenty of water, especially during the summer months. A reusable water bottle is environmentally friendly.

**Nice-to-Haves (But Highly Recommended)**

* **Rangefinder:** If you’re shooting at longer distances, a rangefinder can help you accurately determine the distance to your target.

* **Binoculars/Spotting Scope:** For checking your target hits without walking downrange constantly.

* **Timer:** Useful for measuring your draw speed, reload times, and other shooting drills.

* **Gloves (Shooting Specific):** Provide a better grip and protect your hands.

* **Extra Batteries:** For your electronic ear protection, red dot sights, or any other electronic devices.

* **Note Pad and Pen:** Record your range data, make notes on your performance, and track your progress.

* **Small Towel:** For wiping your hands and equipment.

By packing your range bag with these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for a safe and productive day at the Eagle Mountain range. Remember to prioritize safety, practice good firearm handling techniques, and have fun!
